The story of Rinah, a patient, Manu\u2019s experience as a donor and an expert\u2019s answers to the most frequently asked questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rinah (now 16) from Aschheim was diagnosed with blood cancer and received a life-saving stem cell transplant at the age of 12 in 2015. All she knew was that she was from the United States and that she had donated stem cells in the San Diego hospital. In San Diego in summer 2017 it was finally time and she met Martha Vasquez (45) from Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Rinah remembers how sick she was, she is happy and proud of what she has accomplished. She regained a normal teenage life and no longer has to take any medication. That\u2019s why she happily continues to be committed to the DKMS and encourages people to register &#8211; for example in May 2019 with a campaign for students for the \u201eworld blood cancer day\u201c at a school in Erfurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It mainly affects children&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><div>Blood cancer kills more children worldwide than any other<\/div>&#13;\n<div>cancer. Many patients cannot survive without a life-saving<\/div>&#13;\n<div>stem cell donation. Only considering Germany, every 16<\/div>&#13;\n<div>minutes a person is diagnosed with blood cancer, worldwide<\/div>&#13;\n<div>the rate is even every 35 seconds. And still every fifth patient<\/div>&#13;\n<div>in Germany does not find a donor!<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blood cancer is a malignant disease of the heamatopoietic system. For many patients, the only chance of a cure is to transfer healthy stem cells from a suitable donor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"border-color:#f78da7\"><blockquote><p>\u201eAt the time, when I was diagnosed with blood cancer I thought: oh god, that\u2019s who I am now? You just hope that everything will go well&#8230; When I found out that a donor had been found for me, I was totally happy. From thereon it could only get better. \u201c<\/p><cite>RINAH<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rinah\u2019s story brought her closer to her future dream&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><div>Rinah would like to become an actress and was able to get a<\/div>&#13;\n<div>taste of \u201eset-air\u201c when visiting the shooting of the \u201eClub der<\/div>&#13;\n<div>roten B\u00e4nder\u201c (Red Ribbon Club). At the time she was even<\/div>&#13;\n<div>the face of a tv spot for DKMS motivating young viewers of<\/div>&#13;\n<div>the series to register as donors. Who can register as a potential donor?<\/strong> Every typing is now possible via a smear of the cheek mucosa of the donor. A cheek mucous membrane swab is taken using three so-called \u201cbuccal swabs\u201d (special medical cotton swabs). Then they are sent to our laboratory together with the completed declaration of consent. Any healthy adult aged 17 to 55 can become a potential donor.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"\u00dcbersetzung\"><span lang=\"en\"><strong>How often is the donation made and what is the procedure for the donor in this case?<\/strong> In our experience, a maximum of five out of a hundred potential stem cell donors will donate a stem cell within the next ten years. If someone is considered a donor, the person will be contacted by the DKMS. Before the actual donation is made, the health check and the confirmation typing must be carried out. <strong>Two possible procedures<\/strong> are used for stem cell extraction. The decision as to which to use depends on the patient&#8217;s needs. Donor requests are taken into account where possible. In <strong>peripheral stem cell extraction<\/strong> (apheresis) &#8211; a procedure that is used in around 80 percent of cases &#8211; the stem cells are taken from the bloodstream. The donation lasts three to five hours, in rare cases a subsequent donation is necessary the following day. The donor can leave the removal clinic on the same day. The second option is <strong>bone marrow extraction<\/strong> from the pelvic bone, which takes place in around 20 percent of cases today. Two small incisions in the area of \u200b\u200bthe posterior pelvic bone are usually sufficient for removal. The risk is essentially limited to anesthesia.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"\u00dcbersetzung\"><span lang=\"en\"><strong>Which patient will you never forget? What was special?<\/strong> At DKMS you basically come into contact with many great people &#8211; be it our donors, our supporters or our patients and their relatives. Again and again you are lucky enough to be able to experience very special moments. An encounter that I will certainly not forget was the meeting with Mathies from Norderstedt in autumn 2018. The boy was suffering from severe aplastic anemia in 2007 &#8211; at the age of five &#8211; and exactly 10 years after a registration campaign that I was involved in, I met the family again and it was really moving to see and hear how great Mathies has developed since then and what plans he has for his future.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"\u00dcbersetzung\"><span lang=\"en\"><strong>How do you deal with this if you cannot find a suitable donor for a patient?<\/strong> Our goal is to help every patient and give them a second chance at life &#8211; but in fact it is not always possible and no suitable stem cell donor can be found. In Germany alone, one in ten patients waits in vain for their \u201cgenetic twin\u201d. We do everything we can to ensure that as many people as possible can be registered and that more and more helpful donors are available for the global search &#8211; so that even more life chances can be given.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"\u00dcbersetzung\"><span lang=\"en\"><strong>Why should our readers register with the DKMS?<\/strong> Because it can be so easy to help and give a sick person a new chance at life. The sender was clearly: the DKMS, the German Bone Marrow Donor File. Thecontent was nevertheless surprising: I had been shortlisted asa stem cell donor for a specific person. It was over ten years ago that I had been typed at my school as part of a DKMS registration campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far the DKMS had only written me to check my contact details. Now they wanted to conduct more tests with my blood\u2013 and needed new blood samples from me. That was in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After a few weeks I got a call<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There were enough matches between my cells and those of the ill person. So, I should indeed donate. At the beginning of September there was a last preliminary examination. Now nothing stood in the way of the donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><div>Only six days before my scheduled stem cell donation, I was<\/div>&#13;\n<div>lucky enough to be able to accompany one of my dearest and<\/div>&#13;\n<div>best friends to the cellex collection center for her stem cell<\/div>&#13;\n<div>donation. Everything went smoothly, it was finished in less<\/div>&#13;\n<div>than three hours and we could enjoy a free afternoon<\/div>&#13;\n<div>together.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In my case, I\u2019m glad I had company<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt so well prepared for my donation that I almost went to the collection clinic on my own. Then a friend accompanied me spontaneously. She then had to stay much longer than planned. I probably have the worst veins that cellex employees have ever seen. That is why it took a lot longer to connect me to the device which filterst he stem cells from the blood and channels the rest back into the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore I had enough time to even watch two and a half movies, while in the same time on the deckchair next to me, two people donated successively.  And at the end of the day I was even fed. That hasn\u2019t happed to me for a while as well. About six months later, a letter from DKMS arrived stating thatthe woman was well off and in the meantime left the clinic. Unfortunately, the Czech Republic prohibits donors and recipients from getting in touch. The regulations are very different in different countries. Nevertheless, even though it wasn\u2019t that easy for me: the effert was worth it and there is hardly an easier way to save a life. Die gemeinn\u00fctzige DKMS informiert k\u00fcnftig noch umfassender \u00fcber das Thema Blutkrebs und Stammzellspende. Ziel ist es, m\u00f6glichst viele neue Spender in die Datei aufzunehmen, um so die Chancen auf Leben f\u00fcr Blutkrebspatienten zu erh\u00f6hen. \u0084Wir wollen noch mehr Patienten weltweit Hoffnung schenken. Daf\u00fcr ist es wichtig, dass wir junge Menschen fr\u00fchzeitig \u00fcber die M\u00f6glichkeit der Stammzellspende informieren und sie langfristig als Unterst\u00fctzer f\u00fcr uns gewinnen\\\", erkl\u00e4rt Kristin Breuer, Chief Communications Officer der DKMS, anl\u00e4sslich des World Blood Cancer Day (WBCD), der j\u00e4hrlich am 28. Mai stattfindet. \u0084Unsere Erfahrung zeigt, dass die j\u00fcngere Generation vor allem dann aktiv wird, wenn man erlebbar machen kann, warum ihre Hilfe so wichtig ist. Das m\u00f6chten wir mit Hilfe der Ausstellung erreichen. Insbesondere junge Menschen k\u00f6nnen \u00fcber einen langen Zeitraum Spender sein und bringen aufgrund ihres Alters in der Regel gute k\u00f6rperliche Voraussetzungen f\u00fcr eine Stammzellspende mit.\u0093 Die interaktive, medizinisch fundierte und \u00fcber mehrere Jahre anwachsende Ausstellung zum Thema \u0084Was ist Blutkrebs?\u0093 ist deswegen speziell auf die Bed\u00fcrfnisse junger Menschen ausgerichtet. Sie wird mit der K\u00f6ln International School of Design (KISD) konzipiert und designt. Herzst\u00fcck und Startpunkt ist ein von der DKMS entwickelter Virtual-Reality-Bereich, in dem jeder hautnah nachvollziehen kann, wie Blutkrebs entsteht und wieso eine Stammzellspende lebensrettend sein kann. Zusammen mit Th\u00fcringens Ministerpr\u00e4sident Bodo Ramelow und Schauspieler Ivo Kortlang (\u0084Club der roten B\u00e4nder\u0093) wurde heute an der Integrierten Gesamtschule Erfurt (IGS) der offizielle Startschuss f\u00fcr die Ausstellung gegeben. \u0084Aus pers\u00f6nlicher Erfahrung wei\u00df ich, wie wichtig das Thema ist \u0096 mein Sohn lebt nur dank einer Stammzellspende\u0093, sagt Bodo Ramelow. \u0084Ich finde es gut, wenn junge Leute sagen: Wir wollen wissen, was das ist, wir wollen wissen, was das bedeutet. Ein Engagement f\u00fcr die DKMS bedeutet: Ich setze mich mit einer m\u00f6glicherweise t\u00f6dlichen Krankheit auseinander, bei der es Heilungschancen gibt. Mein Appell lautet daher: Ran an die St\u00e4bchen und helft mit!\u0093 In der Th\u00fcringischen Landeshauptstadt hatte die DKMS Sch\u00fcler dazu aufgerufen, sich zu engagieren \u0096 um so die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Blutkrebs und Stammzellspende anzuregen. Eine der beteiligten Schulen war die IGS, die im Rahmen des WBCD f\u00fcr ihren Einsatz ausgezeichnet wurde und somit stellvertretend f\u00fcr das gro\u00dfartige Engagement von Schulen bundesweit f\u00fcr die DKMS steht. Vorbildlich: Die Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler hatten eine Registrierungsaktion an ihrer Schule organisiert, um so konkret Patienten Hoffnung zu geben. Eine der Hauptinitiatorinnen war Anne aus Erfurt. Die 18-J\u00e4hrige ist Sch\u00fclerin der IGS, war selbst an Blutkrebs erkrankt und auf eine Stammzellspende angewiesen. Nach der Transplantation ist sie auf dem Weg in eine gesunde Zukunft. \u0084Ich bin beeindruckt, wie motiviert und hilfsbereit alle sind \u0096 und bin nat\u00fcrlich stolz auf das Engagement unserer Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler und bedanke mich bei ihnen f\u00fcr den tollen Einsatz\u0093, sagt IGS-Schulleiterin Gabriele Ge\u00dfenhardt. \u0084Ich hoffe sehr, dass dies an unserer Schule zu einer sch\u00f6nen Tradition wird.\u0093 Au\u00dferdem war die DKMS mit ihrem Virtual-Reality-Truck vor Ort und gab einen Einblick in die geplante Ausstellung. Einer der Ersten, die sich eine der daf\u00fcr ben\u00f6tigen VR-Brillen aufsetzten, war Ivo Kortlang. Der 25-J\u00e4hrige lie\u00df sich dar\u00fcber hinaus an dem Tag als Spender in die Datei aufnehmen. Dabei wurde er von Rinah aus dem bayerischen Aschheim begleitet. Die 15-J\u00e4hrige hat \u0096 genau wie Anne \u0096 eine Stammzelltransplantation erhalten und macht Pl\u00e4ne f\u00fcr die Zukunft. Die beiden kennen sich \u00fcber die VOX-Serie \u0084Club der roten B\u00e4nder\u0093. Rinah hatte vor einigen Jahren das Set besucht und an dem Dreh f\u00fcr einen DKMS-Werbespot mitgewirkt. Ebenfalls mit dabei: Influencer Julian Linowiecki, der nur einige Tage vorher Knochenmark f\u00fcr einen Patienten gespendet hatte und \u00fcber seine Erfahrungen berichtete. Insgesamt sind 9 Millionen Menschen als potenzielle Spender in der DKMS registriert. Bislang haben DKMS-Spender mehr als 76.000 zweite Lebenschancen erm\u00f6glicht. Um noch viel mehr Patienten zu helfen, braucht die DKMS Unterst\u00fctzung: Alle 35 Sekunden erkrankt weltweit ein Mensch an Blutkrebs. F\u00fcr viele ist eine Stammzellspende die einzige oder letzte Chance auf Leben. Jeden Tag erm\u00f6glicht die DKMS im Durchschnitt mehr als 20 Stammzellentnahmen. Trotzdem finden immer noch 4 von 10 Patienten weltweit keinen passenden Spender. Die gemeinn\u00fctzige DKMS informiert k\u00fcnftig noch umfassender \u00fcber das Thema Blutkrebs und Stammzellspende. Ziel ist es, m\u00f6glichst viele neue Spender in die Datei aufzunehmen, um so die Chancen auf Leben f\u00fcr Blutkrebspatienten zu erh\u00f6hen. \u0084Wir wollen noch mehr Patienten weltweit Hoffnung schenken. Daf\u00fcr ist es wichtig, dass wir junge Menschen fr\u00fchzeitig \u00fcber die M\u00f6glichkeit der Stammzellspende informieren und sie langfristig als Unterst\u00fctzer f\u00fcr uns gewinnen\", erkl\u00e4rt Kristin Breuer, Chief Communications Officer der DKMS, anl\u00e4sslich des World Blood Cancer Day (WBCD), der j\u00e4hrlich am 28. Mai stattfindet. \u0084Unsere Erfahrung zeigt, dass die j\u00fcngere Generation vor allem dann aktiv wird, wenn man erlebbar machen kann, warum ihre Hilfe so wichtig ist. Das m\u00f6chten wir mit Hilfe der Ausstellung erreichen. Insbesondere junge Menschen k\u00f6nnen \u00fcber einen langen Zeitraum Spender sein und bringen aufgrund ihres Alters in der Regel gute k\u00f6rperliche Voraussetzungen f\u00fcr eine Stammzellspende mit.\u0093 Die interaktive, medizinisch fundierte und \u00fcber mehrere Jahre anwachsende Ausstellung zum Thema \u0084Was ist Blutkrebs?\u0093 ist deswegen speziell auf die Bed\u00fcrfnisse junger Menschen ausgerichtet. Sie wird mit der K\u00f6ln International School of Design (KISD) konzipiert und designt. Herzst\u00fcck und Startpunkt ist ein von der DKMS entwickelter Virtual-Reality-Bereich, in dem jeder hautnah nachvollziehen kann, wie Blutkrebs entsteht und wieso eine Stammzellspende lebensrettend sein kann. Zusammen mit Th\u00fcringens Ministerpr\u00e4sident Bodo Ramelow und Schauspieler Ivo Kortlang (\u0084Club der roten B\u00e4nder\u0093) wurde heute an der Integrierten Gesamtschule Erfurt (IGS) der offizielle Startschuss f\u00fcr die Ausstellung gegeben. \u0084Aus pers\u00f6nlicher Erfahrung wei\u00df ich, wie wichtig das Thema ist \u0096 mein Sohn lebt nur dank einer Stammzellspende\u0093, sagt Bodo Ramelow. \u0084Ich finde es gut, wenn junge Leute sagen: Wir wollen wissen, was das ist, wir wollen wissen, was das bedeutet. Ein Engagement f\u00fcr die DKMS bedeutet: Ich setze mich mit einer m\u00f6glicherweise t\u00f6dlichen Krankheit auseinander, bei der es Heilungschancen gibt. Mein Appell lautet daher: Ran an die St\u00e4bchen und helft mit!\u0093 In der Th\u00fcringischen Landeshauptstadt hatte die DKMS Sch\u00fcler dazu aufgerufen, sich zu engagieren \u0096 um so die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Blutkrebs und Stammzellspende anzuregen. Eine der beteiligten Schulen war die IGS, die im Rahmen des WBCD f\u00fcr ihren Einsatz ausgezeichnet wurde und somit stellvertretend f\u00fcr das gro\u00dfartige Engagement von Schulen bundesweit f\u00fcr die DKMS steht. Vorbildlich: Die Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler hatten eine Registrierungsaktion an ihrer Schule organisiert, um so konkret Patienten Hoffnung zu geben. Eine der Hauptinitiatorinnen war Anne aus Erfurt. Die 18-J\u00e4hrige ist Sch\u00fclerin der IGS, war selbst an Blutkrebs erkrankt und auf eine Stammzellspende angewiesen. Nach der Transplantation ist sie auf dem Weg in eine gesunde Zukunft. \u0084Ich bin beeindruckt, wie motiviert und hilfsbereit alle sind \u0096 und bin nat\u00fcrlich stolz auf das Engagement unserer Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler und bedanke mich bei ihnen f\u00fcr den tollen Einsatz\u0093, sagt IGS-Schulleiterin Gabriele Ge\u00dfenhardt. \u0084Ich hoffe sehr, dass dies an unserer Schule zu einer sch\u00f6nen Tradition wird.\u0093 Au\u00dferdem war die DKMS mit ihrem Virtual-Reality-Truck vor Ort und gab einen Einblick in die geplante Ausstellung. Einer der Ersten, die sich eine der daf\u00fcr ben\u00f6tigen VR-Brillen aufsetzten, war Ivo Kortlang. Der 25-J\u00e4hrige lie\u00df sich dar\u00fcber hinaus an dem Tag als Spender in die Datei aufnehmen. Dabei wurde er von Rinah aus dem bayerischen Aschheim begleitet. Die 15-J\u00e4hrige hat \u0096 genau wie Anne \u0096 eine Stammzelltransplantation erhalten und macht Pl\u00e4ne f\u00fcr die Zukunft. Die beiden kennen sich \u00fcber die VOX-Serie \u0084Club der roten B\u00e4nder\u0093. Rinah hatte vor einigen Jahren das Set besucht und an dem Dreh f\u00fcr einen DKMS-Werbespot mitgewirkt. Ebenfalls mit dabei: Influencer Julian Linowiecki, der nur einige Tage vorher Knochenmark f\u00fcr einen Patienten gespendet hatte und \u00fcber seine Erfahrungen berichtete. Insgesamt sind 9 Millionen Menschen als potenzielle Spender in der DKMS registriert. Bislang haben DKMS-Spender mehr als 76.000 zweite Lebenschancen erm\u00f6glicht. Um noch viel mehr Patienten zu helfen, braucht die DKMS Unterst\u00fctzung: Alle 35 Sekunden erkrankt weltweit ein Mensch an Blutkrebs. F\u00fcr viele ist eine Stammzellspende die einzige oder letzte Chance auf Leben. Jeden Tag erm\u00f6glicht die DKMS im Durchschnitt mehr als 20 Stammzellentnahmen.
