Studying the \u201eother way round\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…and why studying in a small town isn\u2019t that bad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I\u00a0am Marisa and this is my #afterschoolchallenge<\/strong><\/h5><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When faced by the question where I should do my studies, I thought of all other cities but Paderborn. As many others, I first thought of the big cities, like Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne; the cities with the exciting nightlife, where there are scenes and where inspiration lurks around every corner. Growing up close to a big city, I always thought of myself more as a city person and never considered moving to the countryside or to a more rural area. Why would I? Cologne was always right outside the door. Now the start of my studies was getting closer and with it the question: \u201eWhere should I go? Which universities do I apply to? Where can I find a course that fits my interests?\u201c So, I went on <\/span>a search. <\/span>However, from the beginning on, it <\/strong>was most important to me to find the right <\/strong>course and not the right city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Where should I go? What do I find interesting?<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I can clearly see my future dream<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ich wusste, dass ich gerne etwas im Bereich Medien, Musik und Journalismus machen wollte, allerdings aber noch gar nicht konkret welchen Studiengang. Nach der Schule habe ich nicht direkt angefangen zu studieren, sondern erstmal ein Freiwilliges kulturelles Jahr <\/a>bei 1LIVE Plan B<\/a> gemacht, einer Musiksendung im Radio. Nach dem FsJ war ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass ich in diesem Bereich gerne weiterhin bleiben w\u00fcrde, da mir die Arbeit und das Arbeitsumfeld total gut gefallen haben. Schon als Kind war mein Traumberuf einmal Moderatorin zu werden. So war f\u00fcr mich nach dem Schulabschluss nicht erstmal die Frage \u201eWas studiere ich?\u201c zentral, sondern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

How can I get into an editorial office as quickly as <\/strong>possible?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Affirmed and encouraged by my voluntary year at 1LIVE<\/a>, I went on a search and applied first to the usual universities and courses. However, I wasn\u2019t 100 % convinced of the \u201estandard courses\u201c (media science, musicology, journalism). Then, one day, I came across the course \u201epopular music and media\u201c by chance while googling around. I read the description of the course and it seemed to fit perfectly. The content of the course is a mixture of music and media science, which also covers fields of music journalism, music industry, event management, advertising and marketing. This way the course would prepare you to work in the pop music and media industry. And that is exactly where I wanted to end up later!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

And now the catch <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The only drawback…Paderborn.I hadn\u2019t eventhought of a city like that at first while choosing my course. But never mind! The course sounded exactly like what I wanted to do, so I applied anyways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was accepted. And when the acceptance came, I didn\u2019t care about any of the other universities, eventhose in the big cities, and it was clear to me: I\u2019m going to Paderborn, whatever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

My finding<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The most important thing is that I study what fills me with enthusiasm. And now. About a year after I started my studies, shortly before entering the thirdsemester, I can only say that it was absolutely the right decision for me and that the catch Paderborn was not as bad as I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

These are the advantages of studying in a small town:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
  1. You are not just one of many. <\/strong>As the city is not that big everything is less anonymous, and you are more visible. This also applies to the university. As my course in \u201cpopular music and media\u201d is not as big as for example business administration or teaching, you get to know people very quickly. This way close friendships and circles of friends are formed. These are very important because as long as you have the right people the city is anything but \u201cPaderboring\u201d. Since, to be honest there is not much going on in the city itself, closer social contacts are created, and you just spend nice evenings in the park together with a few beers or in a flat-sharing community.<\/li>
  2. My gain \u2013 my job at the campus radio. <\/strong>For me personally, another very big advantage of the university Paderborn is that I was able to join the campus radio quickly and easily and that there was even a real radio workshop for newcomers. This way I was able to actively participate in the campus radio, try it out and learn something new. I imagine that to be more complicated at other universities with a large number of students, in a big city.<\/li>
  3. \u201cLuxury situation\u201d \u2013 affordable and great apartment. <\/strong>Another important point, in which Paderborn can clearly score is the search for an apartment! Rents are relatively cheap, and the housing market is not yet \u201ccleaned up\u201d as in big cities. If you look in time, you get good apartments that are very central for an affordable price… Which big city offers this luxury?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    But there are also disadvantages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    1. When everybody is gone.<\/strong> You can tell how important the people are during the semester break. When everybody leaves Paderborn and drives home, it is totally boring. During this time, the small town is clearly a disadvantage.<\/li>
    2. Little inspiration. <\/strong>I also miss cultural institutions such as museums or art exhibitions. Simply to be inspired by one\u2019s surroundings, colorful scenes, cool clubs and nightlife, unusual fashion, none of this can be found in Paderborn.<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
