Hi, this is Johanna,
today I tell you how I used the time in my last holidays sensibly and which advantages I had thereby.
Advantage 1: Something for the resume and you earn money
A holiday job is not only a good way to supplement your pocket money, it also gives you the opportunity to gain a lot of experience that might be useful later in your career. In addition, a holiday job gives you the chance to work during the holidays.
Advantage 2: Working with your best friends
When my best friends and I heard that they were still looking for people to take care of the summer games, we contacted them to apply there.
Advantage 3: Doing something good by the way
The holiday games were organized by Caritas to give children between the ages of six and eleven the opportunity to go in excursions and play together. During the holidays, the children are therefore busy during the day.
Advantage 4: No complicated bureaucracy
Documents, which we had to fill in and return, were send to us very quickly. Further information and the confirmation that we could help out arrived very quickly.

Whether in childcare, gastronomy or in your parents’ business – there are so many areas in which you can work during the holidays, earn some money and gain an insight into the world of work. That’s what you can do:
- Ask in your own (church-) congregation for jobs
- Check out employment websites
- Write a holiday job application and post it in one of the surrounding supermarkets or bakeries
- Read the job advertisements in the newspaper
If you would also like to help out with holiday games, please contact the youth welfare office in your city right away. Here you will surely get information about who offers holiday games in the upcoming holidays.
My holiday game story
The first day we spent dividing all the children into four groups of about 20 to 30 people each. By getting to know each other in the groups, the ice was quickly broken, and the first contact made. Now the holiday games could really begin.
For two weeks we made many different trips. For example, we went to a climbing forest and various playgrounds or we did a rafting tour. Sometimes we offered creative activities like handicrafts or baking.
Challenges that can you of your nerves
But there were also difficult moments, for example when there was a dispute between the children and they had to be mediated without treating someone unfairly. Another challenge was to keep an eye on all the children in general and to ensure peace and quiet. This sometimes took a lot of my energy. After all, I also ad a lot of responsibility to ensure that nothing happened to the children.
My conclusion: This holiday job was a real gain
Despite many challenges, I had a lot of fun with the children and also among the caretakers the atmosphere was great. I personally have learned a lot!
Alex’ holiday job became a future perspective
“When I was 18 years old, I also worked at the holiday games. For me it was a good opportunity to gain educational experience. At that time, it was new for me to take care of children and young people at a large public event. Particularly challenging was that I didn’t know the participants and had to convince them quickly to follow my instructions, for example on the climbing wall.
A boy, for example, always pushed himself off the climbing wall and wanted to dangle wildly through the air, which was not allowed. He was finally excluded from the offer because he was not reasonable. That could have gone better. The exclusion of someone is always the las educational measure.
So, I gathered my experiences which did not deter me, but encouraged me much more to study social work and to professionalize my pedagogical work.”
Alex, 33 years old from Cologne
Could you imagine taking a summer job? Have you ever taken part in holiday games yourself and how did you experience them as a child?
Yours, Johanna
