This is how you become successful!

My name is Kim Weisstrofer, I am 31 years old, an educated banking specialist and I have found my home in the finance domain. I was especially taken by the sales and further by the people working in sales – that is how I came to know concepts for young professionals. In this article, I will be giving you four tips on how to be convincing in the jungle of applications and how to lay the base for your professional debut.

To help young people find their passion, and then develop themselves personally and professionally in synch with that, and creating synergies between employer and employee – I love that!

The way to my passion

I never really knew where I would end up one day. I had to move on immediately after my apprenticeship since I could not stay at my workplace because of the banking crisis. So this is how I proceeded in the job market: First, the goal of security which means having an unlimited work agreement. That was not always successful – until one of our family friends gave me one tip “Do not search for a job, a job description, a title – search for people who have an alike mind, who have your spirit and with whom you can make a change.” That is what I did and that is also how I ended up in the position I am in right now.

Why it is also important for you to find the right profession

I know how terrible one can feel with “this” leader, “these” colleagues, “this” company culture which does not fit oneself. We spend so much time at work that when we feel miserable there it will also affect our private life. I can barely describe in words what the “right” profession does to us. For me, my week does not feel like work for me. My work gives me energy instead of depriving me of it. Of course, sometimes I am exhausted and that is normal especially if it is a busy period. However, I often think about what else I can do on weekends – not because I have to –but because it gives me joy.

Are you also rather on the search for suitable people to make a change instead of on the search for a job? Then ask yourself these questions:

1. 1. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN BEING “TOGETHER”?

2. WHAT SHOULD A JOB BE FOR YOU AND GIVE YOU, AND WHAT DOES THE COMPANY GAIN BY HIRING YOU?

3. WHERE COULD YOU FIND PEOPLE AND COMPANIES HAVING SIMILAR ANSWERS AS YOU IN 1 AND 2?

Tip: 1. Note down your answers. 2. Discuss your thoughts with someone you trust.

Du wirst erfolgreich sein, wenn du diese vier Dinge befolgst:

1. Analyse yourself – get to know yourself. If you know who you are and what you can and cannot do you are prepared in the best way for a job interview.

2.Be yourself– every personnel manager can feel when you try to be someone you are not and false personalities are not wanted by anyone in the team. There are few things which impress as much as authenticity.

3.Be courageous! Focus not only on the things you cannot but rather on the things you can do. No one has to fill a job profile to 100% or 80%. If you find a great job even without having previous experience – apply anyway! What do you have to lose? A good, funny or original application will not open the awaited door for you in the worst-case scenario but maybe another will.

4. The “momentum” is by chance– if you receive (many) rejections do not take it personally and do not take it as a rejection of your person. Oftentimes, there are jobs advertised since the company requested it even though the job is already occupied or similar. Sometimes you have to be lucky and be at the right place at the right time – do not lose your trust before reaching the finishing point.

This is how you can position yourself well as a young professional

I can recommend to everyone to use digital career networks like LinkedIn and Xing. A personnel manager does not know much about you aside from what you have mentioned in your application. In your profile, show who you are and make your personality apparent. Not only by using your CV. Try to look at your profile through a stranger’s eyes – what kind of impression is made? A good profile can lead to not you writing an application but instead, companies writing an application for you. Moreover, it is not bad at all to have only a few contacts on these networking sites since you are new to the job market.

You are not exactly sure where you want to apply after graduating? Then ask yourself these questions:

4. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WANTING TO TRY FOR THE LONGEST TIME?

5. HOW DO YOU WISH YOUR DAILY WORK LIFE IN THE FUTURE TO BE?

Tip: 1. Note down your answers. 2. Discuss your thoughts with someone you trust.

Let yourself be inspired by others

For me, it was difficult making myself seen in my job. I mean showing that I can do something, that I have potential and that I want to develop myself even further. How can I make myself seen as an assistant? By answering the phone in a particularly polite manner today or by creating especially pretty PowerPoint slides? Honestly, as a woman under 30, I did not have the feeling I could be recognized as a potential leader or similar. That annoyed me really bad. While men of the same age (who also created the same kind of PowerPoint slides) were supported as “talents”. That is when the tip from the family friend was very important.I did not strive for that “position” anymore. Rather, I searched for people who would quite literally take me as full. That was the wheel for my personal development.

Girls for girls tip:

Your work life is long and not a one-way street – try yourself out, go in a direction which feels right for you and when it does not feel right anymore then go somewhere else. It is okay to try something out to find out what one is good at. Maybe only half a year of work and travel and the other half a year you do a six-month-long placement. If you are in the lucky position to be able to try yourself out, do it. But the most important thing is:Do not be scared of rejection. We have a lack of qualified personnel and we have a market of employers – your job is waiting for you somewhere you only have to be courageous enough to grasp it.
