These last few weeks, there has been a lot of talk going on about Veganuary. What exactly is meant by this term? Simply put: Living vegan for the entire January to try out a plant-based lifestyle. But is it as simple as that? Eva has done a lot of research concerning nutrition and now, she knows what is best for her. She does not only pursue a vegan lifestyle at the beginning of a new year. In this article, she tells us about her path to veganism and gives us many helpful tips. Furthermore, she conveys her easy and delicious recipe for brownies.

How come you decided on becoming vegan?

“You are, what you eat.” – Nutrition is a very important topic and it has a very special meaning for me. However, finding the right kind of nutrition was not simple for me. After trying out several diets, I developed an eating disorder, resulting in psychological and menstrual dysfunction. That is why, I searched for a solution and found it in vegan nutrition (Eva is 19 years young, studies economics and lives in Cologne).

Many cannot imagine following a vegan diet, as they do not want to do without something in particular. This is how a possible vegan conversion might work out:

Veganism is not for every man and every woman 😉. It is very important, to listen to your own body to prevent stressing your body out. That is why I recommend urgently relinquishing certain foods little by little and paying attention to how your body reacts. First, I began going without meat and then, dairy products, fish and eggs followed. Nowdays, one can find alternatives for everything. You can find high-quality vegan meat, cheese, and egg substitutes, and I could not even see a difference in my monthly spending. Sometimes, I eat salmon gratiné with vegetables or I prepare an omelette for breakfast when I have a feeling that I will enjoy it.

Lieferando is participating in Veganuary for the first time and delivers surprising facts concerning a vegan diet.

  • 166 % more vegan deliveries on liferando.de since the pandemic started.
  • 70 % of 18 to 35 years olds are interested in vegan nutrition.
  • More men (58 %) than women (46 %) are interested in a vegan diet and they tend to cook vegan more often.
  • A myth disappears, only a third of Germans fear having a nutritional deficit.

How do I convince my family and friends to try out a vegan diet?

In my opinion, everyone should figure this out for themselves, but you can always act as an example and attract interest from others. As I began slowly going without certain foods, I started preparing new dishes and invited my friends over. I did not try to convince them or force them to follow my example. I only wanted to spoil them with something I discovered by myself. And when people understand that vegetarianism and veganism do not only consist of fresh-cut vegetables, but of very interesting dishes, they are surprised and try them out. Sadly, many people still hesitate because of the myth that vegetarianism contributes to nutritional deficits. However, these myths can be easily removed. There are many recipes on the Internet and in cooking books. Nowadays, there also is a grand selection of restaurants that do home delivery. So, it is worth it to try out something new – maybe next time something vegan?

Disclaimer for a vegan diet: A balanced and healthy diet is important for every kind of diet. A long-term renunciation might cause a deficit and can have bad effects within a longer period of time. It is possible to have a balanced vegan diet, but this requires enough knowledge about relevant nutrients. You should inform yourself by using respectable sources or/and talk to your family doctor about it.
